The ANZSIL annual conference has played a significant role in disseminating feminist research on international law. In 1989 at the ANU's International Law Seminar (the forerunner of ANZSIL) Hilary Charlesworth, Christine Chinkin and Shelley Wright presented the initial version of their celebrated article ‘Feminist Approaches to IL’ (published in the AJIL in 1991). The ANZSIL Interest Group on Gender, Sexuality and International Law was established by Susan Harris Rimmer and Kate Ogg thirty years later, after they launched the Research Handbook on Feminist Engagement with International Law (Edward Elgar) at the 2019 ANZSIL conference. The subgroup is open to anyone undertaking research on gender and sexuality (both broadly defined) and international law, as well as scholars wanting to expand their research agenda to include these perspectives. The Group had its first meeting at the 2019 ANZSIL conference, and aims to build a network to share research, foster linkages between practitioners and researchers and mentor research students and early career academics. Ideas for other initiatives are welcome.
